I remember reading somewhere saying that if we mount the 35 1.8DX on a full frame camera and used it in full frame mode (i.e. not DX mode), you will get quite a bit of vignetting but otherwise the image is actually usable. So yesterday i took my dad's 35mm 1.8 DX lens and mount it on my D700. Turn off the auto DX mode so the image is not cropped and, YES the image is definitely usable especially when shooting at wide open. Yes there is quite a bit of vignetting but it is a lot better than what i got when i tried my Sigma 10-20 on D700 (which you can see a clear black circle at the corner). And depends on what photo/background you are shooting the dark corners and drop in picture quality around the corners may not even be a real problem .. and save me time adding vignetting in photoshop as well LOL

here are some of the photos i took using the D700 + 35 f/1.8 in full frame mode.

All of them are unedited JPGs straight from camera.

Camera settings: Vignetting Control = normal

With a white background, the dark corner is a lot more noticable

If you are stop down to f/5.6 or even small, then you'll get a much sharper dark corner. Not really suitable for landscape.

35 1.8DX's center sharpness is really good even when compare to it's big brother 35 1.4G

Corner performance wise, there is simply no comparison as one is a DX lens and one is a FX lens

Nice experiment. The colors are wonderful with the 35mm f/1.8 DX. For the Sigma 10-20 on the D700, did you have the black circle even in the DX mode or only in the FX mode?
vw
Looks good. The vignetting isn't that bad.
good info thou i dont own a FX monster.. Big Grin
I did this same experiment with the 18-55mm DX lens, used it on a film camera. Quite a bit of vignetting occured at lower zoom settings(18-28mm), but was less as you went longer(35-55mm).

On another note, I just bought a 35mm F1.8 DX lens, got it used via one of the Photo forums...This thread made me very happy.

vw: with the Sigma 10-20 (or actually any other DX lens), if you use it in DX mode, then it should be pretty much the same as if the lens were used on a DX camera. The black circle should only exist when you try to use it in FX mode..... or you installed the lens hood incorrectly so the lens hood petal is at the wrong angle LOL

ctm: yeah the vignetting isn't too bad on this set of photos, but it will look worse when you have a bright/white background

skyrocket: haa your next camera might be a FX Wink

nikon kiu: yes when i tried my Sigma 10-20 on the D700, i got really bad vignetting (actually more like black circle/corner) between 10-16 or so... then the vignetting becomes less obvious. But yeah the 35 1.8 should work much better than the 18-55 on a full frame/film camera. Especially when you are shooting close objects @ wide open

I will try take some more photos ... and maybe with comparisons with it's big brother if you guys are interested?

hopefully my wish come tru...i did experience the vignette effect due to my bad observation after installing cokin bracket to my tokina 12-24 dx. At certain zoom (cant remember) the bracket seems visible around the corners.
Added some more sample/comparison photos between the US$200 35mm f/1.8DX and the US$1800 35mm f/1.4G
