Alternative for Nikkor 14-24 F2.8
Sigma 12-24 Beware of Sigma QC issues. Ensure you get a sharp copy. Its a full frame lens so the range of 12-24 can be used.
Tokina ATX-X 12-24 F4 DX lens, so on a Full Frame camera, range is about 18-24mm.
Nikon 12-24 F4 DX Excellent from about 17-24mm on full frame.
Technically there is no substitute for the Nikkor 14-24, these are just alternatives.

Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 !!! For under $150US, it's simply the best bang for your buck lens..
nothing at this price range can match it's picture quality and has such a large aperture!!
It's also light and small too. everyone should have one unless you already have a f/1.4

I think bang for buck zooms :
18-200 DX F3.5-5.6 G (IF)
18-200 DX F3.5-5.6 G (IF)

Apparently the 70-300 VR is good and affordable as well.

18-200 VR is $709 on B&H (U.S.A)
If you want Bang For Buck , you should probably get
18-55 VR $189 and 55-200 VR $229 (both U.S.A. stock on B&H)
together they give you the same zoom range and aperture as the 18-200VR and price is only $418

Didn't think of it like that. What would you recommend for a person moving to Nikon, as a good and value for money lens setup?

If you had a little bit more to spend, you could consider
AF Nikkor 24-85 F2.8-4 D (IF) about US$500 (FX compatible)
OR
AF-S VR 24-120 F3.5-5.6 G (IF) about $570 US (FX Compatible) This is slightly slower but has more reach and AF-S.
and
AF-S 70-300 F4.5-5.6 G VR about $550 US.
So in total $1000 US for 2 VR lenses that are FX compatible!
NOTE: Just speaking from specs, no idea what optics are like.

70-300 VR is a great lens!!
i say it's Nikon's (closest) answer to Canon's 70-200 F/4.
