I was a little bored this afternoon. So I took out the tripod and shot the 5D and the D700 to have a look at the noise difference.

I did NOT edit any of the photos, no sharpening, no lighting adjustment. As is out of camera, just crop.

Taken off tripod, in Av / Aperture mode at F4. 2 sec timer for nikon and 10 second timer for Canon.

Crop was of top left hand corner of the image at 100%.

nice comparison thanks for sharing!
it's interesting to see the difference between the old generation full frame camrea with the new high ISO king.
btw, how come the 5D pics are underexposed? does the camera calculate a different exposure speed (comparing the same ISO)?
The exif data show :

D700 ISO 1600 1/160 F4
5D ISO 1600 1/250 F4

The metering is different. THe D700 on the whole has brighter shots. The tripod was exactly in the same place and all taken within 5 mins. So lighting isn't an issue. Just different metering calculations.
were they both in matrix metering ?
or was the Canon in center weight/spot metering?

both in matrix / evaluative metering.
I did another one this time with the same shutter speed and aperture in M mode. The Canon compared to the NIkon under exposes between 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop.
