Do you use protection? Or do you take the chance of it getting knocked up?

I personally think protection ruins the aesthetics and is rather costly considering what it is, but I don't take the risk and use protection all the time.

Apparently the thin ones are the best.

That would be the Hoya Super HMC Pro 1. I mainly run HOYA gear or Kenko.

I recently put one on the 50/1.4 D and it doesn't look anywhere as cool as without one.

Your thoughts on this matter?
LOL
i have the Kenko Pro1 Digital UV filter.. but i normally don't use them.
the big lens hood is my protection instead. I only put the UV filter on when i know there is a chance my lens may become very dirty or damaged by something.

Actually over the last 15 years or so i haven't even come close to damage my lens, not even once. and i'm aiming to be like that for the next 30, 60 years if i live long enough haha
Using protection, is sensitivity affected?
sometime yes, sometime no....
and yes i only use thin ones
This is interesting, the UV filters flare a green ghost!

this is actually the main reason why i don't use any filter unless i really have to. Lens manfacturer spent lots of time/money on how to design the lensso to keep the flare at minimum level... now we just add another off the shelf glass on top, which normally means FLARE..

But the one in your link to seems a bit extreme..
Its probably because its a cheap filter. The expensive filters I feel handle flare a lot better.

Its just like buying a $1,600 US lens and then buying some really cheap lens filter on. I feel it defeats the purpose of the expensive lens in the first place. Some of these B+W filters are like over a $100 US each!!! damn!
B+W filters feel nice. I use them as my UV filters. Haven't found any problems with them. They're not the cheapest things in the world though. Some people say that uv filters/protection filters may cause more damage if you drop your lens because the filter can ruin the thread of your lens if dropped.
It's funny how this topic can trigger such emotional arguments between photographers on other forums (Dpreview). You wouldn't even think this would be an issue. Use filters for protection if you think it helps, otherwise don't? I personally use it because number of times i find fingerprints on the front elements even though i don't remember touching them. So mainly i use it to prevent fingerprints, small scratches, dog licks, baby fingers. Lately i've just been leaving the lens caps off altogether and rely on UV filters for protection, it's worked quite well. When i'm out there taking photos, i'd rather concentrate on compositions rather than worry about gears getting damaged. I suspect i'll continue using UV filters even when i move onto more expensive lenses, a little loss in image quality doesn't bother me.
Yes exactly.
i think when discussion on forum, everyone should remember one very important thing. Everyone has his own opinion on every topic and it's okay to express your comments and opinions.
But most of the time there is just no absolute right or wrong. So don't try to force someone else to agree and follow what you think is correct.
