Dont' you find that there isn't much offered apart from the 14-24. I know its a great lens, actually an excellent lens. But there is not much offered in the range of 17-40 or 16-35.
If you are comparing with Canon, Nikon almost always has a smaller range of lenses compare to Canon.
Especially the "prosumer" level zoom and the exotic prime lenses. But i think Nikon's ultra wide zoom line up is not really that bad, at least compare to some other areas.

Nikon's current Wide Angle Zoom lineup:
3 FX Zoom:
AF-S Nikkor 14-24 F2.8 G ED
AF-S Nikkor ED 17-35 F2.8 D (IF)
AF Nikkor ED 18-35 F3.5-4.5 D IF
+ 2 DX Zoom:
AF-S DX Nikkor 10-24 F3.5-4.5 G ED
AF-S DX Nikkor ED 12-24 F4 G (IF)

So there are a total of 5 wide angle zoom..and remember there are still the 3rd party zoom lenses and then Nikon's own wide angle primes...
dont forget a 17-55 2.8
