Most new SLR's have a built in automatic sensor cleaner by shaking off dust.
Most Canon are set up to clean upon turn off and turn on. Nikon has an option to choose if you want it go on and off at start up. I do mine quite regularly to ensure that dust does not settle on the sensor. It just saves me sending the body in.
Having sensor cleaning helps alot, I have had a Canon 40D for 2 years with NO dust on the sensor ever. It really works. I also blow some air in every time.
I try to clean a sensor quite often.
