the 17-55 f/2.8 is really quite expensive.
18-70 is not bad consider it's a lot cheaper than the 17-55.

But i think the question is how wide do you want to go? Some people is not happy with the 17 or 18mm on a DX camera and want even wider like 10-11mm wide.
I love my 85mm.

>What do you think about the Nikon 17-55mm or the Nkon 18-70mm?

Reply: I have a Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 and can only rave about it. It is notably better than the 18-70 and sharper even than the Nikkor 50 f1.8mm which I sold after buying the 17-55. So if it's in your budget, the 17-55 is the way to go. I love mine. Big Grin
Now I'm deciding whether to get the 85 f1.8 or f1.4 and this article has shown me that the f1.8 is just fine for my semipro needs. I guessed the last two photos correctly but I was really impressed with the sharpness of the child's face in the top (1.8) shot.Exclamation The professional might really want the slightly better bokeh but this review has really helped me decide.Smile

What a gorgeous shot.Shy I think this shows clearly why corner sharpness is really not an issue for this lens in portrait photos.Undecided
yeah looks like the 1.8 is the better value for money.
but 1.4 has better bokeh
It's hard to beat the 85mm 1.8mm (price / quality). Overall I use my 18-70mm quite a bit and feel most comfortable with this lens. If money is no object then the 17-55mm 2.8 is the king (pro lens).
I am guessing nikon will release a new afs 85 1.8g very soon. They have updated mist of their popular af prime lenses already. The 85 1.8 should be updated very soon
These are lots of picture quality difference in the both camera.
I have both the 85mm 1.4d and 85mm 1.8d.

Am selling the 1.8d in favor of the 85mm 1.8g...

I mostly shoot glamour and portraits and mostly use a 70-200 2.8 on a D7000 body.

When I use the 85mm's, its usually for a touch more sharpness or strictly for bokeh.

Trouble with the 85mm's vs the 70-200 is focus speed and accuracy.

Am hoping the 85 1.8G will have better accuracy and speed than the D versions.

I have heard the 85 1.4G is fast and accurate, but is too pricey for my infrequency of use...

What I'm liking to know is, has anyone experienced the focus speed/accuracy of an 85 1.8G yet, vis a vis these other lenses?

Thanks,
As far as I know this lens hasn't been released yet.

There seems to be a few people eagerly awaiting its release. Check out http://mansurovs.com/nikon-85mm-f1-8g-announcement for a bit of a rundown on what is coming. This bloke does pretty good reviews and will be a good place to see the final outcome.

All up it looks promising. The 85mm 1.4G is an excellent lens and the focus is fast enough for pretty much everything, and this should be a little faster. I think people get carried away with focus speeds, generally you aren't focusing from close to infinity every time. The accuracy of the new Nikon lenses is spot on from what I have seen so far, so I can see no reason why this would be different.
I have used the 85mm 1.4G a bit, to be honest i feel the AF speed is a bit slower or pretty much the same as the 1.4D. Definitely not faster.
