I guess they are following the D2 style with D2x then D2xs and the D2h and D2hs.
Its been 2.5 years since the release of the D3. I think its time for an upgrade. I don't think we'll be seeing a D4 for quite a while.
Any guesses as to what is going to be in the new D3s ? I think they might incorporate the sensor cleaning?
Maybe a little bit more MP?

if they are releasing a D3s, then my guess is:
- since D3x has no sensor cleaning so i believe D3s won't have it as well
- MP will be exactly the same. Correct me if i'm wrong , Nikon never changes image sensor when releasing a "s" model
- Probably video.
- Faster FPS??? (as if 9fps is not fast enough)
-Minor upgrades like better AF, better high ISO, updated UI..etc
really it's hard to think of things that you can really improve on the 2 year old D3...
IF there isn't much being updated, then whats the point of an update? The D3 is fine as it is. 9FPS is already way fast! Same MP? Autofocus is pretty good, if they do upgrade the D3s, then I would presume the new D700s and all will also have the same a/f.
Maybe video will be added, I also think they will switch the D700 UI in to the new D3s. The D3 is still on the old system I think. The one where you need to press a button and rotate a dial to zoom in playback.
Maybe 50,000+ ISO??
the s model is always only a minor update.. just to extend the life of the current model for a year or so longer before the next major/new model comes out...
from my memory
D70 -> D70s, the only major difference is the LCD increased from 1.8" to 2.0".. then some very minor changes like slightly better AF..etc
D2X -> D2Xs slightly improved AF, bigger battery, better (but same size) LCD and bigger image buffer..etc
you can see these are all fairly minor changes... there is no new image sensor, or any dramatic improvements, those are for the next brand new model
the D300 -> D300s is probably the biggest improvement for a "s" model as far as i can remember.
ah ok.... it shows i am a Nikon noob!
Then what is the point of the "s" model? Just to drop the price of the old D3? Or delay the introduction of the D4 for another few years?
"s" model is like the car facelift model.
The new model is not out yet.
So in order for their "old" camera to compete with the other brand's newer (and normally means better) camera, Nikon have to put in a few changes to make the "old" model a bit more attractive to the public... before they got to release their brand new camera.
Is this the end of the D3?

Canon hasn't released anything? Sony released the A850. But I wouldn't call that a competitor to the D3.
I think its a way to make more $$$$.
Bring on the D4.

Canon has not release the 1D Mk4 YET. But it'll probably be released very soon. Nikon would have their own roadmap so they won't wait until after their competitor release the new model then they release their model.
and you are also correct, no matter Canon release the 1DMk4 or not, it's a way for Nikon to make more $$$ as a "s" model will bring both the sales/price up a bit
