I've been looking for a good quality compact camera that i can bring with me all the time... the D700 with a 24-70 gives me awesome picture quality but it's just way too big to carry with me all the time esp when i want to travel light. Even without grip + a 50mm f/1.4 is still not that small when you have to carry a lot of other stuff already..

Sigma's DP1/2 is quite nice but has it's own problems.. Ricoh makes some nice compacts which i'm quite interested in. LX3 got very good reviews so it's a possible choice.
Nikon has been really lacking behind in this area.. so will Nikon release a good quality compact camera preferably with large sensor anytime soon?

Or maybe i'll buy an Olympus EP1 with the pancake lens when it's released here...
I have seen some interesting reviews regarding the Fuji S* something. How about the Canon G series? or Sony?
Um... This isn't a Nikon, but I just got to play with a Canon Sx110is. Bought it as a gift. It's really quite a cool little thing. It is a super zoom (10x) but it only starts at 36mm which is not wide at all! I was choosing this camera for someone who doesn't want anything complicating and wouldn't know the difference between shutter speed or aperture. The sx110 has the cool face detection software which is really cool, and also has IS which is really useful!

I chose the larger sx110is rather than the Ixus range was because a pocketable size isn't a neccesity for the person, and the 10x zoom would've been more useful. Also the larger 3" screen was something that can't be missed. The sx110is also has M mode just incase the user feels like being adventurous.

For CTM though, I think a G10 would suit you better =P But keep in mind it's about 800nzd for this little 14mp monster while the sx110 can be had for half of that.
I dont need one. Yellow15 is looking for one.

I have a pentax that is waterproof, but the image quality is poor.

Yellow15: The Olympus E-P1 looks pretty COOL. But I don't think its that compact.

You have the Sigma, Ricoh, Canon, Pentax and Panasonic LX3.

I don't need SUPER compact I just want something that is small enough that i can put it in a normal bag.

What i want the most is a good quality basic rangefinder with full frame sensor!

something like a digital S3 would be cool:

so the E-P1 is the closeest thing on the market right now
That Olympus looks sexy in the ads... Maybe its the model that is holding the camera, but either way, looks awesome! Its like the cheapo version of the Leica.
yeah i want a cheapo version of the leica
by cheap i don't mean $300US .. i mean between $500-$1000 US for a basic kit that takes good quality pictures!
DPReview just released their EP-1 review, it has it's own faults.. but after reading the review makes me want to get one even more as my daily camera.

-Very good high ISO performance (DSLR level, comparable to D5000 (D90,D300) )
-Good Dynamic Range
-Sharper than the other DSLR like D5000, 500D
-Small size (similar to Sigma DP2)
-Takes 720p movie with aperture control (so i can take videos with small depth of field )
-Body optical Stabilizer

It's not a perfect camera, it has a lot of shortcomings
but this paragraph really says what i feel this camera:

"The head says no, the heart says go

The E-P1 is one of those rare products in this mass-produced age that can provoke an emotional response in even the most jaded shooter, which is a tribute to the Olympus design team as much as a reflection of any pent-up desire for a new category to bridge the yawning gap between compact cameras and entry-level DSLRs.

It's easy to come up with a list of reasons not to buy one; the slow focus, the dime-store screen, the lack of built-in flash, the paucity of Micro Four Thirds lenses, the unimpressive 'iAuto' mode, not to mention the fact that Panasonic could - and probably will - produce something that fixes half these problems at some point by making a compact version of the GH1.

In fact the biggest question I'm left with looking at that list is why don't I want to give this one back? Because in spite of - perhaps in a small way because of - the E-P1's limitations (some of which could be solved with a much-needed firmware upgrade), it's a camera that ticks an awful lot of boxes and fills an awfully big hole in the digital camera market. And it's also a camera that is, literally, in a class of its own - at least for now."

I WANT ONE NOW!
Just hold on. This is the first camera in the line of many to fill this gap in the market. If you buy one now, you will probably regret in a few months. You still have a Handycam and a D700!! Its not like, you dont have a camera!

Impressive little machine, I wonder what it will be like when Nikon/Canon make one.

you are right i definitely should hold on. I'm waiting for Panasonic to release their equivalent model. Panasonic's recent lineup are just very impressive, the LX3 is considered by many people as the king of many compact camera and their new micro four thirds GH1 is another awesome camera. If they take the GH1, maybe take away a few more advanced features, fit it into a EP1 size case, then it'll be the perfect camera!!!

To be honest, i don't know if Nikon/camera will make a EP1 like camera (i.e. small camera with larger size sensor and interchangable lens) for a few obvious reasons. But if they release a DP1 style camera (or even better, the digital S3 as i suggested above) then that'll be very good.
