and slightly off topic.. i'm still not fully understand why Nikon name their DSLR cameras this way:

Single Digit is Pro model e.g. D3
3 Digits is Semi-Pro model e.g. D300
2 Digits is Consumer model e.g D90

Canon is a lot more consistent in the way they number their cameras.

so maybe now Nikon is now changing the consumer models to 4 digits? e.g D5000?

But between the D90 and the D40 / D60, isn't there a difference in levels?

Excuse my nikon noobness.
The "old" line up is like (from entry model to top model)

D40, D60, D90, D300, D700, D3

so you see jumping from 2 digits to 3 digits to 1 digit

right now it's even more confusing!!!

D60, D5000, D90, D300, D700, D3, D3x

but if D3000 is real and it replaces D60.. then it'll be like:

D3000, D5000, D90, D300, D700, D3, D3x

so looks like eventually all the 2 digit model D90 will be removed and replaced by the 4 digit models??
Maybe you all know more about this than I, but I wish that Nikon would introduce something to compete with the Canon 5D mkII like a D700 with 1080p HD video capability.

You mean the D700x rumour. It'll come sooner or later. Not sure about the 1080p. But if you ask me, the D700 can easily compete with the 5D Mk2. I know quite a lot of photographers switched from Canon to Nikon when they upgrade from their 5D.

That's why Nikon can price the D700 at same level as the 5D Mk2.

And when the D700x comes out, it'll probably be a lot more expensive than the D700. Look at the price diference between the D3 and D3x Sad

Thanks, wrong. You all know more about this than I. I just wish the D700 had come with HD video too. Well I can wait. Mostly because I can't afford it right now. Wink
Wait is good.
There is always a better camera coming out every few months

That is unless you've just bought a new camera, in that case, a newer, better and cheaper camera will come out next week LOL
Not unless you get a good deal! hahahaha.

But to be fair, at this point in time, any camera you buy will last a while. The only reason to upgrade is to get something better, it doesn't mean what you had isn't usable. Smile

I think the next D700 or D300 will have HD video. They have already said so in that interview with the engineers.
I always find D5000, 1000D kind of numbering silly.

I thought D5000 was to replace D60.

D90 is prosumer grade vs D60's entry level/consumer grade
