What is your "go to lens" and why? I'll start by saying my "go to lens" is my trusty Nikkor 35-70mm 2.8. It not the fastest focusing lens, since it does not have the built-in motor, but it's fast enough. Tack sharp too! Works well on portraits and as a walk around lens.

I usually have the 50/1.4 on my body. So I guess that is my 'to go' lens??
If I need it, its the 50 as its usually on the body.
Hi wrong, To me "go to" lens means that is the lens I can count on to get the job done, under almost any circumstances.
If I can take only one lens, that's the one that will almost always be on the body.

af-s 24-70 f2.8 for sure, althought i don't use it very often in formal shoot, but its the one i will never sell.
i'm really in love with my AF85mm f/1.4 at the moment and it is ususally on the body recently. i take it with me everywhere.
But if i can only choose one lens, it's either AFS 24-70 f/2.8 or AFS 50mm f/1.4G
i love 24-70's versatile, image quality and fast AF speed.
but i also love 50 f/1.4G's small size and weight.
50mm f/1.4 + D700 (no grip) = easy to carry around and i can shoot even when it's almost completely dark!!
If I had to take 1 lens on an assignment, I would take the 24-70 f2.8 as well.

I have read that the 24-70mm 2.8 and the 14-24mm 2.8 are at the top of the list for the most sharpest lens available. Perhaps the sharpest ever designed by Nikon. I wish I had both.

I think the Nikon 24-70 is one of the best 24-70's made when comparing to Canon, Sigma etc. it has corner sharpness that rival primes!
velvia world, you are partially right, 14-24 is probably the sharpest zoom lens among all nikkor zoom, but 24-70 and 14-24 definitely aren't the sharpest from nikon, in my opinion, the 200 f2 is sharper than any of the nikkor lens i have tried
