This is just a quick write-up. Adding a umbrella to direct flash shots does wonders considering its price. I picked up a white umbrella from the local 100 Yen shop or $1 Dollar shop as known in New Zealand. I paid as the shop stated a whopping 100 yen or NZD $2.00.

Here is the umbrella:

This is flash direct at the camera and direct with the umbrella.

This is the difference: Flash was at the same place, to the top left of the camera, hand held and set to 1/16 power. Camera shutter 1/80 F4 ISO200 M mode triggered with Ebay Phottix Wireless Trigger / receiver. The umbrella and flash was hand held by me while the wife shot the shots.

Note the shadows under the chin.
Final results after some minor tweaking. It is still not 100% ideal, but considering what I have at the moment, this is the best! I need some stands to save me holding everything.

Note: I am not saying this can't be done without an umbrella, but more that the umbrella is a great tool and for its cost, it shouldn't be overlooked. Turning down the power is another option, but I feel, it would underexpose.
