Anybody know anything about this lens? It isn't the latest one with AF-S and VR. It is the older version. I am thinking of getting it to add to my arsenal instead of the 150-500 Sigma.
the latest 300/4 VR isn't really too expensive so i guess the old one can be found at very good price?
the only thing is it doesn't have VR but i heard it's image quality is quite good.

Read good things about it.
Thanks, that is the one. There are 2 models. One is before 1993 and one is after 1993. One has D and one doesn't. But all are ED I think.

The cost is the main driving factor at the moment. They are about $300 US in Japan second hand. The AF-S VR version is about 1,100 US. Considering the cost, it is a pretty good option. Just hope the optics live up to the price. haha
Mate, the optics should be top drawer. Built like a tank, etc.
My 80-200 is more or less from the same 'time' (and price) and the optics are very much the ones they still use today for the same lens (which has progressed to the ED, AF-S, VR, etc.)
Even if you don't like it - won't lose much selling it, if anything.
For that price - can you organise me one too, please?

Just don't tell the girlfriend.
I'll be in big trouble.

The 300/4 AF-S ED IF is about $1,000 ~ 1,100 USD. Both 300/4 models do not have VR.
The older 300/4 AF ED version has been around since 1987. The newer AF-S took over in the year 2000. Most of the older AF versions are at least 10 years old and are pretty 'banged up' hence the low-ish price. Due to it not having AF-S, it will not work with the Nikon Teleconverters.
I am still in two minds if it is worth the $300~$350 US or so.

Built like a tank!
What a beauty.
Gees, for that price, I'd snap it up quicker than you can say 'marshmallow'
Pretty sure you can always sell it afterwards for a decent price.
You can always advertise it here too.
