the D200 grip is not bad. It makes the camera easier to hold both in portrait and landscape mode.
D200's battery life is quite bad so it's good to have 2 batteries
Anyway my grip is now almost permanently attached to my camera (also because i'm worried about breaking the battery door clip everytime i remove/install the grip)

ah the grip is the one that inserts itself in to the old battery bay. I am actually really amazed with the D700 MB-D10 as it just connects to the bottom of the camera without the need to remove the battery door.
I can also opt to use the battery in the grip first then the one in the camera next!

I use the grip on my D300 all the time. I've used a grip (used to be a motor drive) on my cameras for about 25 years, so I'm pretty comfortable with them, and uncomfortable without them. The MB-D10 is REALLY nice. Fits like a glove.

I also have a MB-D200 grip for my D200. I've never taken it off. Just like wrong posted above battery life and convenience for both portrait and landscape mode are the best reasons to get one.

Yes, when i first got my D700 without the grip, i just felt like part of the camera is missing when i hold it on my hand. Then i got the MB-D10, it's just so much more comfortable!!
Every now and then, i have to use a D200 with no grip and a 24-70 f/2.8 or 70-200 VR to shoot some events. It just feel very very uncomfortable.

Anybody tried a non-branded grip so far? I have seen some on Ebay but am unsure if they function properly or if they are worth the $$$. I am very worried, they will break and the camera will drop.

There are quite a few discussions about the 3rd party grip for D300/700 on DPReview
e.g.

There is definitely quite a bit of difference in quality as the Nikon MB-D10 is probably the best quality grip ever made. But the price difference is also quite large.

Wow, $80+ US for a grip compared to $250+ for a MB-D10.
There are a few differences from reading the threads. The knock-offs are made of plastic where as the Nikon is Magnesium. I think it isn't too bad. It looks pretty good and the reviews aren't bad. I would only buy if the reviews are good. Otherwise, you could get a real lemon.
This is a review of the one from "link delight" Meiki Mk-D300 : http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.a...e=30317483

yeah there are a few knock-offs. From my memory, there is one (or two) that is better qualtiy than the rest and were recommended by most. I can't really remember which one it is now...
