No, I haven't bought one but really thinking about it more and more lately. I've always been fascinated with macro photgprahy and a general 'love' for (abstract) details.

Read some good reviews on the 105mm so wanted to know if any of you own/have used one? Thanks for any input.
i don't have it but i've used it a few times. it's a great lens. very sharp, great bokeh, VR helps but not as useful as you would hope when shooting macro. autofocus is a bit slow but you probably won't use autofocus anyway when taking macros.

if you want a cheaper choice, maybe try find the old AF105?
Nikon 105VR is a great macro lens and also a good portrait lens. You won't be disappointed.
The only bad thing is the price when compare to the 3rd party 90-100mm macro lens, but you got what you pay
Thanks for info, guys. Much appreciated. I guess I'll start saving for it then... Bloody NAS... Big Grin
Just one thing - isn't 105 a little long for portraits, especially on a FX?

Perhaps someone could share with us the optimal focal length for prortrait photography?
yeah the 105 is a very nice macro lens and quite good portrait lens.

on FX,105 isn't really that long? (i think my 85 is too short with my D700!)

on DX it's longer at around 160mm equivalent.

but personally i shot a lot of portrait using the long end of my 70-200 so if you ask me, 105 on DX is actually quite good Big Grin
Thanks for that, yellow.
Once, I also remember coming across some sort of a graph indiacting the various perspective distortion and different focal lenghts. Can't find it now. Would be interesting to compare once more.

If someone can find it - do share, please.
