Do you think these 2 cameras are comparable?

Both are 12mp.

D300 is Crop and 5D is Full Frame, but it seems on the spec sheet that the D300 has a stop more in ISO.

D300 has an edge with CLS, -5 to +5 EV compensation and even built in flash! LCD size and pixels,

I know the D300 is usually compared to the 40D as they are both Crop.

The reason for this comparison is because, the 5D is outdated, if an upgrade /switch is in the works, then would be looking for something with a similar price point and the D300 is about the same as the 5D currently. How about a D200?

My main concerns are 1) Low light ISO (yes, i knwo get a full frame, can't afford a D3 / D700). 2) autofocus. Thats all I can think of for the moment.

Opinions? Ideas?
Canon and Nikon's models are normally not directly comparable.
But D200 was normally compared to the 5D. D300 is replacing D200 with a lot of upgraded features so I don't think D300 should be compared to the 40D.

D200/300 is a pro grade model. It has a real metal body, weather sealing, 51 focus point.
A lot of world class professional photographers use the D300 regularly as their 2nd or even main camera.
I know this is a Nikon forum, but is the 5D really that shite! hahaha.

Anyway, if I was to swap.

I would swap

5D = D200 / D300
430ex = SB600
24-105 F4 L = ??????

The benefits would be : CLS and 51 point a/f and believe it or not, weather sealing!

That MB-D10 is expensive!
The differences would be alot between the D200 / D300.

The D300 is better is almost every way.

12mp vs 10mp
14 vs 12 bit
NEF 14 bit vs 12 bit
TIFF vs NONE
Sensor cleaner vs none
51 point vs 11 point a/f
3D tracking vs none
ISO6400 vs ISO3200
6fps vs 5fps
Active D lighting vs none
100% frame coverage vs 95%
3.0 " vs 2.5"
922,000 pixels vs 230,000 pixels
Live view vs none
HDMI out vs Composite

Slightly lighter as well.
if MB-D10 is expensive, you can get a 3rd party one for 1/3 of the price and comes with free 3rd party batteries too

i would say D300's high ISO is at least as good as the 5D if that's what you are concerned about.

D300's 51pt AF is basically the same as D700/D3. The main difference is the focus points are more spread out and covers almost the full photo

I would expect D700 to have more faster focusing ability. I am not sure if that's the case. I notice D700 renders nicer colour, but again I am not sure if it's just to do with the colour profile setting.

24-105 = 18-70...lol
D300 is a better camera, 5D maybe nice for studio (higher IQ, but thats probably the only thing)
